Assessing Anesthetic Options for Nonsurgical Periodontal Therapy

COURSE DESCRIPTION

To deliver optimal patient care, pain management is an essential component of periodontal therapy procedures. Supported by science, this course will provide the dental professional with the information necessary to make an anesthetic choice based on each patient’s needs. This course will include information on a new, non-injectable local anesthetic for scaling and/or root planing.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the development of local anesthetics in dentistry
  • Explain the neurophysiology of pain conduction
  • Identify methods to manage the perception of pain
  • Describe the anatomy of dental innervation
  • Explain the action of local anesthetic drugs on pain conduction
  • Discuss the physiological effects of vasoconstriction
  • Categorize local anesthetic drugs according to type and duration of action
  • Identify the benefits and limitations of a new non-injectable anesthetic option
  • Conduct a needs assessment to determine the appropriate anesthetic option for patients
  • Accurately document the administration of local anesthesia in treatment records
